Because it is less expensive for our postal system to route it through other carriers, than to use our own system. Think of it as a lot of giant businesses now have, "The Product Cheapening Department", a needed department with the primary and only intent of convincing the higher up brass that it costs more to purchase goods, and/or services, while actually obtaining said goods, or services for less. Product Cheapening Department, a necessary department for any government entity. GM does it with ignition switches, it costs less to buy a $1.00 defective switch, than to buy a good one for $1.25 per unit. The "gamble" is, will the defective ignition switch outlive the effective life of every vehicle they are installed in? If so, no foul, only profit, and a "get out of jail, free" pass, if not, deny any problems, put off resolution for 8 + years. Fiord does it with every truck they sell, as 98 percent of all Ford trucks are still on the road...the other 2 percent have actually arrived home. |

Either that or it got put on the wrong plane by accident. I've had that happen when sending something to a customer once or twice. |

My GF has been an attorney for the postal service for 25 years. There is an amazing amount of crazy decisions made everyday as well as unfounded lawsuits that you and I pay to defend. The majority of the mail hauling is outsourced to independent trucking companies on a fixed price contract. BTW, it seems that postal management has been trying to go to a 5 day work week for many years in the hopes of trying to lesson the future losses. You can thank Congress for staying with the 6 day delivery service. Personally, I could live with a 4 day service. |

Just as a point of information, if it weren't for the USPS, I might not be able to keep my little triples business going. For me they are the only viable shipper for shipments outside the US, being way cheaper than any of the alternatives. And it may change tomorrow, but with the many hundreds of packages I've sent all over the world, they have not yet lost even one. |

I understand a lot of it guys. I understand the reasoning for outsourcing, I understand they're a viable (most of the time) carrier. I'd still fire the bastards - they are not an efficient operation and they should be I don't care what Forbes says. I understand about their issues with Congress and all that - but still, this is crazy. And this outsource to PR (if that is the case) - then how come my simple package has been sitting in a PR sorting facility since just after midnight Monday morning - and no updates since then? It is now 1302 local time there. With systems today there should have been an "exception" report generated somewhere about the package not moving or such. Back to my saying fire them and start over. |

[quote="Jim" if it weren't for the USPS, I might not be able to keep my little triples business going. After 35 years in sales, I firmly believe that it is pretty easy to sell a dollar for 97 cents. OTOH, I use them for small parts shipping to. I get packages from the UK in 3-4 days although stuff from the left coast takes considerably longer. go figure |

I agree with Jim wholeheartedly on using the USPS. I had nothing but problems with Fred-Ex, and UPS, lost packages, sent to the wrong addresses and/or zip codes, address labels ripped off the packages by the machines used to read them, other issues. On more than one instance, I had to go to our local UPS hub in So. Cal., and personally find the package in the pile under the rollers that had fallen off days before, and get it back into the delivery mode for them, to all sorts of non-deliveries. I even had one delivery woman go to the address, an office, ask if the addressee was there, heard "YES", turned around, walked out of the building, and sent the package back to me, as "undeliverable". USPS has only had TWO issues in shipping my packages over the last 16 years I have used it as my default shipper. I still have issues with them when they KNOW I am in the shop, and don't even try to deliver, they leave a delivery notice in the mail box, even when it would take less tome to simply get out of the van and deliver it to me, and, the box is big enough for most packages, 3 feet, by 3 feet by 3 feet large. Depends on the driver that day. |

Even with the newer higher international rates they continue to be the most affordable AND reliable shipping venue to use for either US or international as far as Im concerned. |

It's pretty much the same in Canada, they are about 1/2 price of the courier... USPS and Canda Post have a good partnership going and they only do a random search of packages which translates into me only having to pay duty once in the last 8 years for triple parts. |
