I took a blacksmithing course here, fricking loved it. Yes it's an art, the teacher can do incredible stuff. Dying out in America too but there are craftsman still out there.

Maybe blacksmiths are a dying breed for horseshoes etc. but forging will always be around.
In the beginning of the video they are making a steel ring, there is no other way to make a quality alloy steel ring that I'm aware of? My company deals with Scot Forge on a regular basis and they are busy, busy, busy!

Incredible video!! Open die forging is an art!!!
Like you guys say !! seems all forging houses are Incredibly busy, We had lead times of up to 1 year for those guys in the video ..Firth Rixson Sheffield UK! We did final machining on landing gear forgings (Large stuff).. If you scrapped a forging during final machining.. there was hell to pay. If you scrapped the Lot .... you would have to pay insane expedite fees. Forgings always played havoc with our MRP system. In many cases they owned the closed dies so going somewhere else was not an option.

great vid... i worked in a machine shop that used to machine the "flap tracks" for the Airbus (i think)out of huge titanium forgings and the rumors of what the rough forging cost were always flying around .

My ex wifes grandfather was a blacksmith by trade.
He taught courses at "The Farmers Museum" in Cooperstown, NY for years.
His wife, was the weaving and loom specialist and also taught classes there for years. Big ole barn looms and spinning wheels etc. in her home studio.
He had a forge set up in the bottom of the barn they converted to their house.
We used to take our kids over and he would make nails and horseshoes and stuff for them.

Very cool stuff. A dying art form for sure.

Whats getting hard to get is the coal. I had to drive 2 hrs to get some for my little forge. You can mail order it but it is real expensive compared to picking up a 50lb sack. I can also use oak but it isn't as effective.
