Maybe watch "The Longest Day" or "Saving Private Ryan" to see the scope of the war. I'm reading a book about American and English bombing missions in WW2 and it's just amazing how many young men died fighting for us back then. Watch "12 O'clock High" to get an idea. |

thanks JP... My grandfather fought on your shores. Army infantry (He came in after D-day) He was shot 2 or 3 times and patched up and sent back in. I know that the company he was in lost a ton of guys, including his best friend that died in his arms. My grandfather finally ended up being sent home because of trench foot. He never talked about the war until the last couple years of his life, when the American Legion started to shoot video interviews of veterans as they were dying off at an increasing rate and were hoping to preserve some of the history. I've watched part of the video and it is unimaginable what these guys went through for our freedom. He's been gone for 10 years now.. RIP Gramps. I'll see you in a few ![]() |

Yes indeed JP, thank you for being appreciative of the folks from many countries that gave their all to defend Europe from the German forces. My Dad was at the shore on a destroyer (USS Satterlie) and his was the 1st ship to defend the Rangers climbing the cliffs at Pointe-Du-Hoc to invade. His destroyer lambasted the Germans with huge shells from the deck cannons so the US troops could scale the cliffs and attack. He never spoke much of the war either, but he was very proud to have fought in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres on his ship. Those fellows were definatly, "The greatest generation"....... Attachment: vetransday.gif From the net.... "In the first week of May 1944, Satterlee underwent training for a special mission assigned to her for the Normandy landings. She was to support a crack unit of 200 Army rangers in eliminating a German gun battery at Pointe du Hoc which commanded the Omaha landing beaches. After escorting minesweepers to the beach area on the night of 5 and 6 June, she commenced pre-arranged fire on Pointe du Hoc at 05:48, 6 June. As the rangers landed, she broke up enemy units attempting to oppose them from the top of the cliff." |

Although I am a bit young to of made D day I did make two Mediterranean cruises while in the US Navy in the early 70’s. The ship made a port of call in Villefranche on the French Riviera and while there I took a bus tour of the French Alps and Monte Carlo. Beautiful! It was my favorite port of call while in the Navy. Corfu, Greece wasn't bad either ![]() FTG2 Evans (fire control technician, guns) |
