So, I just bought a bike with paypal, I went to pay and had $1,400 in my paypal account, the terms were 0 fees if using my paypal balance or $49 if using my bank balance, I hit "pay" . . . . . . assuming that they would take the $1,400 and top it up with $100 from my bank - They left the $1,400 in my account and took $1,500 from my bank and charged me the $49 ![]() ![]() ![]() |

God forbid if you ever transfer money from your paypal account to your bank! It was almost 10% on a $1000... We learn by our mistakes! ![]() |

Andrew, I'd like to understand this better. We transfer money from PP to another account regularly, and I'm not aware of any big fee like that. |

It was a while back so I don't remember the exact amount but the exchange rate was stupid plus the fee... Keep in mind the currency was at par, I ended up with $900 Canadian in my bank from $1000 USD. Even if half of that, it would be a rip off. |

OK thanks. I didn't realize there was a currency exchange. Even so, it's nowhere near that bad when someone overseas buys something from me using PayPal, and there's a currency exchange there too. I wonder if your experience happened when the US dollar was worth substantially less than the Canadian dollar. It looks like in 2011 the US dollar dropped to 0.94 Canadian dollars a couple times. That's a $60 difference in a $1,000 conversion by itself. Forgive my exaggerated interest in this subject, but it hits close to home. |

I just got off the phone with paypal and they confirm what you say Jim, no fee's but they make 2% on the exchange rate. Then I asked him to lookup my history as my memory from the above post. No records of me transferring money... Wtf? I know that's not true! I'm going to get to the bottom of this, I swear! ![]() Anyway, the way it is right now, it's just the exchange rate... $1000 USD = $1080 CDN |

If it really was in 2011 when the rate was bad for you, it may be that they don't save records that long. How far back can you look at your PayPal history when you log in to their site? Edit: I just checked my PayPal transactions for March of 2010 successfully. |

I can download as far back as I want, but just 2 years at a time with a 24 hour delay... I'm losing interest already! ![]() |

Ive just done two transactions via paypal in the last week or so to my pal Rick in Ohio. I had the money in my paypal account and they charged me 1% on each transaction. I said it was for friends and family and still got charged. |
