The deer are really active around here lately and I have been hesitant about riding also. The weather is warming up and it is time to start riding to work. Last Friday I saw 18 deer driving to work ! (and thats just what I could see on the side of the road!) ![]() |

Someone needs to invent the ADM (Anti-Deer Missile). Oh, wait, they already did. It's called a .30 '06. ![]() |

These whistles are passive, they rely on vehicle speed to generate sound. You can get active ones that work off your vehicle's 12v system. I've installed a few on customer bikes and they really get your attention. They are directional and operate just above the frequencies that humans can hear but when you stand in front of a bike with one on you can feel it. Like a high frequency buzzing that drills right through your skull. If I lived in an area with a deer problem this is what I'd install. |

That's silly because deer don't have jobs! ![]() |

I just read a fairly detailed review of anti-deer noise makers. According to the review, a deer's peak hearing is around 4,000 Hz, not above the range of human hearing, and that's about where the electric ones operate. The 12V powered Hornet was the best, at somewhere around the $60-$70 range. Little proof exists that deer will hear it and stay away, but testing seemed to show they do hear it, and tend to either look up or move away. I'm not convinced yet though, because the deer I see that would hurt me are running across the road at high speed, spooked by my vehicle's noise and movement. How more noise would make them behave in a safer way toward me remains to be proved. I think riding cautiously at night, or not riding at night at all, are probably my best defenses. |
