Post subject:  How Much Paint Needed?

Hi ya'll

Just need a bit of advise please. I have my Ninja 250 which I'm going to paint from black to blue (like blue and prefer to be seen on the road better). The frame will remain black, but the tank, rims, fender, side panels, foot pegs. back will be painted blue. Now I know that when you are changing colour from a dark to a lighter colour that you would need more paint.

I've been told to get 4 pints of blue metallic paint, 2 pints of clear, along with the soft face additive, reducer, and hardener. Thing is, everyone I have spoken to has told me that 4 pints of paint is waaaaaaaaay too much, that can do a whole car. So in the end I got 1 pint of silver as the base, (don't ask, this is what the paint company told me to get to get the colour I want) 1 pint blue, 1 pint of clear, etc.

To be fair, its not going to have just one coat, it will be painted properly.

The bike will remain nekid, and I already bought the blue mirrors, handlebar and hand grips. Oh and the front of the bike will get a piece made covering the gauges and surrounding the headlight which will also be painted blue. So most of what is black will be painted blue.

So is 4 pints of paint and 2 pints of clear too much paint or is it enough?

Hi Lisa
I am no painter but that does sound like way too much. Very cool that you're doing a bike project. Please don't paint the foot pegs.

You might want to use a computer graphics program to play with colors before you start painting, because it seems to me that all those parts in the same blue might not look as good as they sound. Worse than that, why are you concerning yourself with paint at this point? The bike looks perfectly acceptable in the photo, and you are a very inexperienced rider who will probably drop the bike more than once, ruining the new paint soon after it's applied. Get bright colored riding gear and go get some riding experience for 10,000 miles or so. Then if you still have the bike and care about its color, repair the crash damage it will have, and paint it your favorite color(s).

and some engine protection bars (case savers) will be a good investment too.

Coz I just might actually sell it. It's getting fixed up mechanically, missing parts added, so might as well make it look good too. I haven't ridden in a year, never felt comfortable on the roads and my friend who taught me to ride, got killed on his bike last year. As morbid as it sounds, I bought his bike and used the parts my bike needed. We used to swap parts from his bike to mine to see what worked.

Of course by the time everything is looking pretty and running good, I just might change my mind and not sell it, but right now, I could use the money for something more useful and maybe later on buy a scrambler that I can have fun with on the trails.

But who knows what I will decide when it's finished, I might just fall in love with riding again - "woman's prerogative to change her mind."

That is what everyone is saying. Hard to think that a friend would try to rob me :( and he's getting a great deal, he get the engine (valued US $250 so he says) and other parts, in lieu of the work done to it, cost of paint is at me and it's already US$200 for everything. Oh well........

Just make sure you get to keep any leftover paint.

Hmmm, good idea Jim. I did actually only buy 2 pints of paint.

Thanks for all the advise folks.
