my grandfather made WWI from 1915 to 1919. he was in Verdun on 1917 and was sadly injured just before an attack, this saves his life cause a week after he was the only man alive of his infantery regiment, all the other from the colonel to the soldiers were killed in action. After he marched past with the flag of his regiment, lonely, in front of the military commander of Verdun who was Pétain. he was volunter as when the authorities called him for war the doctors said he hadn't the health to go to war. He was also injured by poison gas and finished the war as sergeant, military medal, war cross, legion of Honor. He did also WWII, was prisoner on june 1940 and escaped asap (mean a few days after). He died on 1988 at nearly 90 years old. |
