I get asked this a lot and I'll bet a lot of you are too.

Usually it's some middle-aged person who's never ridden a motorcycle or at best only a couple of time - long ago.

I usually advocate a Motorcycle Safety course, and buy a cheap bike, preferably 500cc and under, in relatively sound mechanical shape and under $1,000 and WITH A TITLE. That's the mark anyway.

My chiropractor recently approached me with this same question. He had a couple of friends who said "buy a big bike that you'll have forever". Idiots.... But he had other friends that said what I did about used, small and cheap.

He's been dirt riding a few times recently and really wants to ride. Safety course is planned. He's been on craigs list and we're trading emails several times a day. Some good possibilities are being looked at.

He really liked my DT400 and we found a couple of Hondas and a DT250 in really good shape (for $2k) he REALLY wants. But his goal is something small, dual-purpose a plus, and something OK for short freeway hops.

Anyway a CB360 popped up today (wish it was a 350 but oh well) and it's a decent price if it's as advertised ($900). We're seeing some pretty high costs for what it is lately, more that what I would pay.

I told him this is the best match so far and he should call the guy soonest and we'll go take a look.

1975 Honda CB 360T - $900 (Colo Spgs)
HAS TITLE -RUNS GREAT- LIGHTS AND EVERYTHING WORKS.

A friend of mine asked me the question a couple years ago. He weighs somewhere around 350 lbs, so I told him he probably needs to get a Harley. It was a little uncomfortable when he asked if I'd teach him to ride using my H2, and I had to turn him down.

LOL Jim...

Naw, gotta be close enough to pickup hence CL - but searching eBay within 100 miles too - choices are limited.

I appreciate it is for a learner, but the 360 Honda is the slowest bike in the entire history of motorcycling..............!! :(

That's not a bad price if the bike is decent. Assuming he doesn't crash it up too bad,he could resell it later and probably break even on it. I think it would be a good one to learn on.

When someone who has never driven asks me what they should start on - I tell them to stay away from motorcycles. If they presisit I tell them to get a 100 to 125 cc and play in the dirt all summer before stepping up to anything near a 360.

But of course a lot of people start out on an 800# HD. Just not going to be me to point them in that direction. And, I know a beautiful girl who has only one leg now. Her boyfriend has struggled with that probably more than she has.

Ya, it happens. :)

The 360 would be a descent learner and, as has been said, could hold it's value down the road. The Cafe crowd loves 'em.

I would agree about the safety course as well. All good advice. :)

The 360 got snapped up same day.

My chiropractor just told me he lives off a country dirt road so I'm thinking a dual-purpose bike might be best.

A CB would work with trail tires though

Jeez Barry, I ride my H2 on a dirt country road every time I take it out. :D
