It was 20 years ago today that I had a very serious street bike accident. I had pulled up to a red light on my 650 Seca and a little old lady behind me didnt stop for the light (or me for that matter) and didnt even brake or slow down. The impact launched me in the air and impaled my bike into the grill of her car (76 Elcamino). Eye witnesses said it knocked me about 12 feet high in the air and I eventually landed on the hood of the car. When the lady hit the brakes I slid off the hood of the car onto the road. I tried to get up at that point but then I realized that I was sliding down the road at a good clip. When I finally came to a stop she had almost run me over, I was looking at the radiator under the car. When all came to a stop I was 257 feet from the initial impact. I actually got on my feet but a couple first responders were in the traffic and jumped out came to my aid, and told me to lie down. The list goes like this 3 fractured virtibrea, fractured pelvis, bruized kidneys and assorted road rash (the road rash wasnt too bad I was wearing leather ). It took about 1 1/2 years to recover but I was told by the police and doctors it could have been much worse. They estimated the speed at impact to be 45-50 mph. This weekend I road for more than 200 miles and really enjoyed it and am looking forward to more the end of the month at the gap

Wow. I'm sure there are some lasting effects from that. So far I've been lucky, but I know it's more or less inevitable.

If you been hit by a car a live to talk about 20 years later, that's a good thing for sure.

Geez Carl , glad ya made it thru alive and able  , could have been really really bad with the vertebrae damage. Would you consider that a near death experience :?: , I had a bad bike wreck July 13 ,1987 and to me it was a near death experience and really cleared my mind of all the stupid stuff I used to worry about, in hind sight and imop the near death experience was good for me

Yes, I was told by the doctors at the time that if I had not been in the physical condition I was in at the time I wouldnt have been as fortunate. At the time I owned a Gym and was heavily into body building and that probably saved me from being paralyzed or worse. I dont really think about that day but I try to ride safe and defensively when I am riding. I just worry about my sons riding, I know they love it and I can remember how I felt about riding when I was young. I just try to warn them of the dangers but I know they love it and are going to ride. The apple doesnt fall far from the tree, and they will be with me next year at the gap. :)

I always get a little nervous when have to sit at a red light too long, especially these days with every one talking on cell phones. Glad to hear it didn't discourage you from riding Carl.

About 25 years ago I was T-boned on my Honda CB900F by a young guy running a red light. I was doing 60kmh and he was doing about 90kmh. The impact broke my right foot, and when I got thrown forward my left kneecap shattered when it snapped the left handlebar. I flew about 100 feet and hit the ground pretty hard. I stayed conscious throughout the whole thing.

My brother was behind me on my Suzuki GSX250ESD. He smashed into the passenger side window & got dragged along for about 100 feet. He broke his wrist.

The people at my work thought for sure I'd give up bikes, then 6 months after the accident I turned up on my next bike, a 1978 Honda CBX. When they saw me park, put it on the center stand, then take my walking stick off my back, they knew I'd be riding forever.

Still nervous sometimes when going through a green light...
