If you've been following along, you know that I fly RC airplanes. I've started playing with an FPV(first person view) system. With this, there is a camera mounted on the plane fed into a transmitter, and I wear a set of video goggles with the receiver, resplendent in my dorkiness. Anyway, the other day, I managed to fly my 55" wingspan electric powered foam plane a full 2Km and back :D

That is cool. I figured out the air speed and acourse the clock displaying Zula time but what other data is being displayed?

Altitude and battery voltage? Really cool. As a radio amateur, I've been thinking about this subject for a while, with cars, boats, and planes. But you did it!

FPV systems first stated becoming viable about 4 years ago. I've wanted one since I saw my first Youtube video back then, and finally took the leap :) All the displays are metric. I've got is set to display zulu time instead of GPS coordinates, just because I don't need to be blatantly advertising my exact location on the internet. The RSSI on the upper left is the receiver signal strength indicator in %, basically how much signal the RC receiver is getting from my flight control transmitter. The OSD voltage is the On Screen Display voltage. In this plane, the video system uses it's own separate battery, so it keeps track of both main and video batteries. All the other readouts are pretty self explanatory.

Very cool, my son wants to mount the gopro on his aerobatic plane but I told him there are other devices much smaller for that purpose, besides I wouldnt want to drop the gopro from an airplane. I have been flying for more that 35 years and my 15 year old boys have both been flying for over 10 years. The one is a national aerobatic champ (I have only won reginal championships no nats and too old now). Cool vidio

Sounds like you guys are much better fliers than I am Carl :) For onboard HD recording I use an 808 #11 keychain camera taped to the plane. It's the size of a standard power lock key fob, records in true 720P HD, and is only 16.6g. The new #16 version is supposed to be even better. Even though Youtube cuts the quality a fair amount, you can get a feel for how my camera looks taped to one of my toy trucks:

I've tried taping it to a more aerobatic plane and honestly, the results are hard to watch. The plane is just so maneuverable that the video jerks all over the place. What looks like a nice slow roll on the ground looks like a spiral of doom on the video. I had to relearn how to fly in order to get nice smooth easy watching videos

Hey Bugman,

Since you are into model airplanes do you know what a "Shoestring" F1 racer is? I built a full scale version (from Ketner drawings) over a 13 year period. Mine is one of about 12 in the world (most are used exclusively for pylon racing 50' off the deck). Cruises about 180 mph on a souped up continental O-200@ 2900 rpms. Stalls at 65 knts...

Must get back flying, as my last flight in 'string was Oct 2008 :(

Yea Looney I know what that is, I am also a full scale pilot. That old conti is a long way from the 150 Cessna it probably came out of ! I have always wanted to build my own but probably won't untill I retire. (airplane that is)
