Post subject:  Ducati 900ss running issue

I have a '95 Ducati 900ss that is driving me crazy. I bought it as a 750 and found a 900ss motor which I went through and replaced the belts, head studs then pieced it back together. The problem I have is that it will only run on full choke enrichment and if I try and open the throttle she stalls. Obviously, not enough fuel is getting through. I am running 900 carbs that have been gone through twice and when I put on the 750 carbs the same issue persists. I've checked the cam belt timing and its correct. The float bowls have fuel in them. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Kevin

If you haven't checked the slide diaphrams, it might be a good idea to do so. Also, if those carbs have alot of miles on them, the plastic guide for the slides could be worn badly. The symptom you describe seems like a lean condition, so check for vacume leaks at the manifolds. And make sure the fuel pump is actualy pumping fuel and the fuel valve is fully open. And if you haven't already done it, replace the fuel filter. One other thing, there is a washer & spacer that go under the slide needle. If missing, the needle will be way to low, making a lean condition.

Brian:
Thanks for the ideas. I agree that its some sort of lean mixture thing going on. Fuel pump is definitely pumping and I've checked the manifolds for leaks BUT I have not checked the needle height so I will take a look tonight.
