I've been trolling Craigslist keeping an eye out for another bike for a buddy. I've noticed that there seems to be a very large gap in the prices of used motorcycles. I see a lot of bikes in the $1,200-$1,500 range, and a lot of bikes in the $4,000+ range. I see very few in his price range of around $3,000. What's the deal with that? Is this just a midwest phenomena? Why aren't people selling mid priced bikes?

Not sure what you are looking for but here's one on another forum that I look at.

He's looking for a middle weight cruiser. Something not to big, but interstate capable. He's stepping up from a 650 Nighthawk. Nearly everything I see is 80's and $1500ish like his Nighthawk, or early 2000's and newer and $4k+. The 90's bikes that should fit in the middle just seem to be missing, and it's not just cruisers. Even sport bikes in this range are no where to be seen. I do occasionally see bikes in this segment, but not nearly as many as you'd think there should be.

I've been watching the Ninja 250s for myself, I keep thinking I need one  Around here older ones are about $2K, newer ones are priced high enough that you're better off buying new

I see V65 Sabre's and Magna's, Big CB's and a few others in that price range.

Even 1st generation V-Max's can be found in that price range.

GS1100E/GS1150E, Yamaha XS1100,

My FJ1200 was $2500.00 and it is one of my favorite motorcycle of all time.

Hauls ass and comfortable to boot.

I find just the opposite, that there is a bump in available choices from $2500 to $3500, with oodles of former open-class sport or sport-tourers, like the above FJ, ZX10, ZRX1100, CBR900 and the Clash-Of-The-Titans-like the GS1100's & KZ1000's.

I agree completely. Not much to see in the 3000 range. I want a clean big bore bad boy I can ride every day. On the up side looking is fun.
