Post subject:  Anyone know about security cameras?

Unfortunately I am in the need of some sort of camera to keep an eye on my fence line that borders my neighbors property. I have no clue on cameras. I need to be able to look down a stretch of about 100-150 feet of fence but it doesn't have to be a very wide area. I am also looking for something pretty low maintenance. I could also probably run a feed cable to the garage if need be. Any pointers on what to start looking for?

Logitech - I have one looking at our garage building. It's in living room, watching through the window and it sends a pic to my e-mail every time there is some motion detected. Sometimes too many pics, birds.. I can also watch online (laptop) when travelling. Not very expensive.

It would depend largely on the layout of your property and structures. Also to some degree what you are looking for.One cam would be tough to see 150ft, especially at night. Unless your system can get a positive ID (close up of face) most cops won't even bother to take a report. A 4 cam system with recorder with cams in the low range of being able to do this would cost around $1200 to $1500.

It is no real property or building layout. I just need to keep an eye on the fence line and what the scumbag neighbors have been doing to the fence as there has been some incidents lately. No real damage yet, but I don't want any either. I could probably do a 2 camera setup 1 on each end if needed.

2 cam systems start around $600.

I get most of my equipment from there. The 2 things that most affect price are dvr features and camera resolution.

Thanks falconman. John, I have thought about it, but once something happens(and it will) without being to call them on it the credibilty goes out the door.

Sometimes it's enough to stop the behavior. They must really be A holes if they don't care if they are being video taped.

That they are. On the bright side the property value of her old neighbors in the trailer park she came from probably went up after she moved away. At least someone got the good part of the deal :(

I've got this system here:
http://www.amazon.com/Zmodo-Surveillance-PKD-DK4208-500GB-4Channel-Security/dp/B0086G1C34/ref=sr_1_25?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1338781672&sr=1-25
It's pretty basic, but is cheap and works well enough for my needs. I've had it about a year and the cameras have handled the WI weather just fine so far. With motion sensing, the DVR records about a month before it starts over writing old data. Never could figure out how to get it to display on a TV, but it displays on my old monitor just fine. Picture quality is OK, but unless they're close, you won't get faces or license plate numbers on it. The night vision is decent, but only records well inside 30' or so. You can add better quality cameras if you need to.

When it comes to cameras, the lower mm the lense, the wider angle the picture and subsequently lower detail. My 3.6mm lenses have around a 90 degree view.
