Over time I have run into various situations in trying to diagnose/fix computer problems. Also needed help to determine the best way to add SSD drives.
I decided to document some of these fixes/incites to the web. It is not totally comprehensive nor is it intended to be but it might help someone else.
I'm not soliciting questions or advice on computer problems as I'm certainly no authority!

Good stuff in there Dale!

One of the things I do is NOT use the canned windows folders for things like My Documents, My Pictures etc.

I always build a separate folder under C/D/E etc - whatever drive root. I call it Barry Stuff and everything goes under it (my personal documents, pictures etc).

The reason being is if windows gets corrupted or something that requires Windows to be re-installed -- you won't loose your personal files (if you've not backed up and many don't).

Contrary to some you can re-install windows on top of itself, done it dozens of times. But if you have your files in the default Windows directory you'll loose it when windows re-installs and overwrites those directories.

Cheers!
bb

Cool, a lot of good info there Dale!
I learned a trick from a big time gamer years ago and finally got to try it on my last (current) PC build. I used 3 hard drives:
128Gb SSD for boot & OS only (Win10)
250GB SATA HD for App installation only
500GB SATA HD for data only
The 2 mechanical hard drives were some I already had, obviously it's easy to go over 1~2 TB if you're buying new drives. But the thing is, booting from the SSD takes just over 10 seconds (it actually takes longer for my LCD monitor to wake up :banghead ) and where a typical PC is normally bouncing the read head of a single mechanical drive from sector to sector, moving from the OS to the app to the data, it is now accessing all 3 simultaneously! My machine is a dual core Intel @3.2Ghz with only 8GB of ram but is faster in most situations than my work computer which has dual quad core 2.4Ghz processors and 16GB ram! :ugeek:

The best thing you can do to speed up a lazy computer is to add a Solid State Drive!
A Samsung 860EVO 500GB is $80 on Amazon. It is probably the best SSD for the money.

My work machines are SSD --- boots in seconds, shuts down in seconds. Definitely my next upgrade when needed.

Just a note for those interested...
There have been numerous adds to the tip list since originally posted.
And it will continue to be updated as I run into or remember items of note.

Great info, Dale.

I have a new in early 2018 HP computer, with the dreaded Windows 10 HOME torture, and want to go to an SSD drive, just haven't had the time, being in the hospital for the 12 days in November, and trying to recover for the last 10 days from the hospital "visit".

I also understand fixes for the W 10 H would be the various different versions of W 10. It'll get that, too.
