This bike belongs to my friend Leroy, I did a little work on it for him. I took it out and rode it before I tore it down but I just couldn't bring myself to light the turbo off, I pussed out. All I did to it was have the body work re-painted, changed the tires, went through the brakes, had the exhaust redone, polished the forks, and clean the rest up. I sent the exhaust to Canada for re-chroming(without the copper layer)and when I got it back the box looked like a cardboard gunny sack, the ends were open and there was 6 pieces of chrome missing, one of which was the connector pipe for this bike(another was a piece for the 1957 Honda I am restoring)and it was a bitch to replace. I talked to a fellow in NY that had a log manifold and connector pipe but he didn't want to sell it and 5 weeks after the parts were lost I found a set in Australia and bought it but it was rusty and dented so I had to send it off to Canada to be re-done. In the meantime I talked the fellow in NY into giving me his connector pipe and letting me replace it with the re-chromed one when it gets back. That was very outstanding of him to do and it saved me at least a few weeks. Anyway, here is the bike. Leroy had his man Hector do the paint and he did a 3 stage candy and as far as I can see he matched the Candy Moondust Silver perfectly. When the Z1R came out in 78 I liked it but I didn't think it was as sharp then as I do now, what a beautiful motorcycle.

Sounds good Gut's I cant wait until I get home to see the pics. I think I have an original turbo bike but I have been unable to verify the bike. I have the original style log system also.

Ah, Z1R-TC, 1978. These used the earlier engines with shorter cam chain. Nice. Later 1980 had the basic Mk II engine, different pistons for the turbo, longer cam chain. I have one of each in my collection.

When Hurley and I had our shop in Santa Ana, it was in the same industrial complex was American Turbo-Pac. We used to go help with engine issues for them all the time. We had a lot of good people in that complex, Speedway Research, Team Kawasaki Road Race, C&J Frames.

Tuner, what was the difference in the pistons? How much less efficient was the log manifold compared to the later one?

A slightly lower compression ratio, by different dome on the piston, don't remember if the turbo pistons were cast or forged. Easy to check out, online parts stores would have parts listings for them in OEM parts replacement charts/price sheets.

The log manifold wasn't that bad, mostly visual effect.

As far as the cam chain, 122 links for the old chain, 124 for the Mk II engine types, along with manual tensioner for the early engine, automatic for the later, with crank for the early, 15 tooth sprocket on crank, 30 tooth cam sprockets on early engines, later, 16 tooth crank, 32 tooth cam sprockets.

They'd have run even better than they did with advances in ignition curves/pressure retard, and EFI.
