So I'm thinking about buying a Honda XR650R. Amazingly Ca allowed the 2000-03 R's to be converted to dual sport and plated. I rode one
about 10 years ago and it was a hoot with about 60hp. Also considering a KTM 520 EXC but don't know much about KTM's. Anyone here
owned a XR650R of a KTM enduro? I don't want to spend more that $4500 I would buy a F9 350 Bighorn but they seem to be getting
hard to find lately.

I had an XR650R for a number of years, big, fast, liked to push front end in the dirt, but it was a desert bike I rode in Iowa. Plated it would be a hoot. I traded mine and bought a YZ250F 80# lighter. The XR650R was 300# that's a lot of dirt bike. Would be a great dual sport, but not so good as a trail bike you want to rip around on.

Yes, that's it in the picture.

I found one in Ca. that has some mods to the motor and pulled 71hp on the dyno. Nice wheelie machine.

Which did you find, the Honda, or an F9? I would like to find a complete F5/F9 engine to put in an S3 or KH400 chassis. I have a later F9 I street ride, has a pipe and some light port work, cut rotary valve, different combustion chamber, suspension work, rides very nicely for an old bike. Only other engine I'd put in a small chassis like that other than a triple would be a liquid cooled KX500.

I found several Honda XR's that are local. I've looked for several years for a F9, no luck so far.

My pal Leroy has a nice Bighorn on EBAY right now. I've seen it and it's dang nice and runs very strong. If you are interested I can have him end the auction. I think $2800 is a decent price for a nice F9.

I noticed the f9 as soon as it showed up on ebay. Looks like a good one. Just deciding if I want it when I factor in the extra $500 for shipping.
These bikes are much harder to find than H2's.

The issues that bike has that can be seen aren't severe, and, if it runs perfectly, even better.

I really like my F9, and, I am sure, the F7 I have waiting to get redone. Me, I like the two stroker's a lot better than those tractor engine dirt bikes.

I've had a couple of Pigs.. I absolutely love them and will have another some day.

Like Joe said, they make VERY good dual-sports (if you can get it plated). I set one up with a Gel-Seat (Bitch'n Stich'n out of Colorado), taller gearing, Shinko 705's and Baja Designs light kit. Stock engine, but uncorked.

I was pulled over more on my XR650R than any other bike I've owned. A 60 HP dirtbike on the street makes you want to ride like an idiot. The 3rd time I was pulled over, it was a younger cop (mid-20's). First thing he said was "nice wheelie", and then "can I see your license and proof of insurance please?" Thankfully, he let me off with a "have a nice day" and "take it easy".

The only thing that can suck about them is re-starting after you crash. (and when dirt riding, I tend to fall down sometimes). Other than that, just about bomb proof.

You should spend the $500 on gas and come out here to pick it up. It would be worth it to see Leroy's collection. ;)
