So for several months now I've searched for a nice Kawasaki F9. Only have seen two for sale, a 75 and a 73. Both where on ebay, and the 75
was from Kaplan Cycles and without a title. The 73 was from Johnny's Vintage motorcycles in Ohio. I bid up to 2500 but with shipping that's as
high as I would go. He still has it on his website and wants 3 grand for it but shipping will be almost 600. Just don't feel the bike is worth that
much but I'm still tempted. Looking at other options, maybe a modern 4-stroke.

I rode a plated 2002 Honda XR650R about ten years ago and loved the bike. California let you plate these here with light kits till somewhere
around the end of 2003. Also researching KTM's. Don't know anything about them but they seem to be good bikes and lots for sale local too.
So if you had around 4 grand to spend on a dual sport, what would you buy? Would like something under 325lbs, at least 45hp and good
for fire roads and single track. Only road use would be secondary roads getting to the trails.

I have two friends with KLR 650's. Great bikes, very reliable, reasonably priced. I would consider one if I was shopping...

They are way over my 325lb bike limit and not enough power.

KTM 690 is a blast but don't know which are the prices in USA.

My neighbor has a KTM 625 and loves the bike. The older bikes are pretty cheap here.

The big KTM single w/o electric start isn't easy to start, better choice a model with an electric start .

Was just on KTM's website and I really like the new 300 EXC TPI. Of course only the 250 model will be sold here and neither will be street legal. I hate being
told by the state what bikes I can't buy or own.

Thnink to buy one a 300 EXC TPI as commuter to ride in ... Paris :D
it's legal any time as old bikes or cars aren't now allowed between 8AM and 8PM from monday to friday unless you've got a collector title. I have only one K triple with such title even if I rode my other triples illegally inside Paris

Hey Ron, a fellow rider of mine up here in the Sac area (we ride in the same group based out of the Roseville area, and I normally ride my 93 Honda Nighthawk) owns both Yamahas dualsports XT225 and XT250, and he's ridden one of these on our rides (not positive, but think it's the 250) which includes twisty mountain roads, paved goat trails, and occasional/short stints on the freeway, and says he loves this bike for it's versatility as well as performance.

Keep in mind, all of the other bikes are a minimum of 500cc on up, Nortons, Triumphs, Harleys, Indians, Hondas, Yamahas, etc., so aside from winding it up a bit at higher speeds of the freeways, he has no problems keeping pace with the group, and in the case of the paved goat trails, actually enjoys a reportedly smooth ride where the rest of us feel each bump and ripple.

So, you may want to look into either a good used one, or at Yamaha's 2018 XT250 for your consideration. He also loves the lightness of these bikes. Good luck!!!
