This spring I bought a John Deere 105. Not zero turn, but about a 6" turning radius, and that saved me 1000 bucks. Great mower....

I've got 400 hrs on a Husky riding mower since 2007. It's been reliable and I can use it to pick up leaves too. One thing to suggest: Make sure you can do as much of your lawn as possible without having to resort to a push mower. There are areas between trees and rock walls and such I can take my 48" but would not fit a 54".
The ride on a smallish lawn tractor can be a little punishing as well so every so often I'll keep a can of marking paint in the drink holder so I can mark where I need to fill in divots from the dog and the !$part number&$%!* moles.

If you can make a deal with Tractor-Boy for a few more mowings, you can wait until next year to get your own. :)
