The phones are ringing off the hook at the “Bufalini” hospital in Cesena, and on the other end of the line everyone (or almost everyone) is seeking information. Information on Nicky Hayden, victim of a cycling accident near the Misano raceway, just to show once more how the ways of fate are so difficult to understand. As for the current conditions of the Kentucky native, news is sketchy at best. We know that Nicky arrived in Cesena in very serious conditions with a cranial and thoracic polytrauma, in addition to various bruising. It is a frantic time, with the rider in the operating room now and the medical team conducting all the due assessments to understand how to proceed. The news of number 69’s arrival in Cesena has reached all corners of the globe, so much that some people have already gathered outside the hospital or in the waiting area, hoping for good news.

(Update the surgery was to insert a probe.)

All this because Nicky Hayden is not just any rider. His 2006 MotoGP World title is just the high point in an important career where the American raced until 2015 in the premiere world motorcycle racing championship, then moving over to Superbike to the joy of factory derivative fans. He is now in his second Superbike season astride the Honda managed by team Ten Kate, who can use the new CBR1000RR Fireblade SP2 this year which has, however, proven to still be less than ripe. This is why the results so far have not properly reflected the character of the American, who crashed in Race 1 and finished 12th in Race 2 at the Imola round.

However, Nicky is known for more than just his performance on the track. In fact, Hayden is recognized in the paddock as one of the kindest and most humble riders and it is precisely for this reason that the motorcycling world (and not only) is praying for him right now.

UPDATE AT 7:30 PM (Italian time): “The rider is in very serious condition and has now been moved to intensive care”. These are the words of Dr. Senni, head of the Cesena hospital press office.

The First 24, this morning,

MotoGP world champion Nicky Hayden, seriously injured in a collision between a car and his bicycle yesterday in Italy, remains in seriously critical condition in a hospital in Italy.

If there is any good news regarding Hayden’s condition, it might be that he has survived the first 24 hours. Many times in the past, persons suffering from TBI (traumatic brain injury) will earn the first check mark on their return if they can survive the first 24.

An overwhelming number of messages of support for the well-liked Hayden have been posted on social media.

This just in from Honda:

The Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team would like to share the latest news on Nicky Hayden.

As well as having his fiancé Jackie by his side, Nicky has now been joined by his brother Tommy and mother Rose who arrived in Italy from the United States earlier today.

Below is a statement on Nicky’s condition from the Maurizio Bufalini Hospital in Cesena, Italy.

“Nicky Hayden’s clinical condition remains extremely critical.

The young man, who is still in the intensive care unit of Cesena’s Bufalini hospital, has suffered a serious polytrauma with subsequent serious cerebral damage.

The prognosis remains reserved.”

--------------------

The mood is very serious here, not many smiles, total concern for Nicky.

The saddest of news, one of my friends is now lost to all of us.

Nicholas "Nicky" Patrick Hayden (July 30, 1981 – May 22, 2017), nicknamed The Kentucky Kid, was an American professional motorcycle racer who won the MotoGP World Championship in 2006. A few days after competing in the 2017 World Superbike Round at Imola, he was involved in a serious accident after being hit by a car whilst out cycling near Rimini, Italy, on 17 May 2017, suffering head and chest trauma. He was transferred to a local hospital where it was reported he had suffered brain damage. He died at Maurizio Bufalini hospital in Cesena on 22 May 2017

RIP, K - Kid. We will eventually all get to that new race track you just arrived at, what a great race that will be. Best lap times to you.
