Post subject:  Thinking about selling one of the herd.....

As fate would have it, right as Ive been settling in at my new house, work has tanked. We've lived most of our lives without much money in the bank, and getting into the new house took everything we had so it's not exactly like we started out in a good situation.

I've always sort of thought of my bikes as money in the bank, such as they are...none of them are stellar but a few are somewhat scarce and so carry some value. All but one of these were acquired for super cheap, either as basket cases or in the case of the one Im thinking about selling, some dumb stroke of luck where the seller had NO idea what he had.

The point is, it would be hard for me to say "Well I'll just buy another one of those later".....because to do so would require a large outpouring of cash all at once. My biggest motorcycle purchase ever was my MZ, which I paid $2400 for...that only happened because of an insurance settlement a couple years ago....Everything else has been buy a "parts bike" for dirt cheap and build it a little at a time.

And its not like I dont have other bikes...I do. Looking at them all together, most objective people would say, oh hell, what do you need all THOSE for? Still, thinking about getting rid of one kind of sucks. Ive done it before...about 15 years ago I had to sell what was then my nicest MX bike and I didnt really regret it that much as I had just finished building it from the box of parts I bought it in...so I was not really attached to it.

A friend of mine has always expressed an interest in the one Im thinking about selling, and to be honest I think I could get a little more for it than he's offered in the past...but all he will do with it is fix it up and put it in his living room and at least I could visit it! And I really hate dealing with John Q Public.

What are some of your experiences with this sort of thing? Ever have to turn loose of something you really didnt want to?
IVe got a couple weeks to decide I think....gonna try and hold on to it if I can.

I've never seriously selling one of my Triples [I have 3 and a rollor] but I did regret selling a CB550 a few years ago. Luckily, they are easily replaceable so I just bought another [actually 2].

Can you sell the one that can be replaced? Or make a deal with your buddy that you get first right to buy it back one day?

Oh, and I doubt you will here one of here say "oh hell, what do you need all THOSE for?"!!

Every time I've needed money i.e. for daughter's wedding, pay off early on the house pay off the car early, I had to sell some good bikes that now I can't afford to replace. Now I just buy different kinds of cheaper bikes and it's still a fun hobby. As has been said many times, in the end bikes are just things. Having a good roof over your family's head is way more important. I still miss my 72 H2 and my 1989 Honda GB500 though.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, in the grand scheme of things, its just an item. Truth be told, last time I had it out it sort of beat me up.....taking an old MX bike around a modern track is not easy. I guess it just follows that the more valuable ones would be the hardest to replace.
I sort of hate craigslist. One of my friends had the classic scenario where someone called about a bike for sale, got the address, did not show up, and then a day later they tried to break into his garage. Seriously think if I go that route I will meet them in a nearby parking lot.
I talked to the sales manager yesterday at work and he says the whole industry (printing) is slow right now and that he expects it will be another few weeks until we are busy again. Even though most say you cant count on overtime, for the last 22 years I have been able to...in that I could count on the fact that I would have 1 or 2 big weeks a month, sometimes 10 or 15 weeks in a row with almost double sized paychecks. Really, for the last 4 years in fact, Ive pulled in around $25k in overtime.

..then there's the $270 a week (not kidding) that comes out for healthcare...when Im stuck at 40 hours that starts to bother me. Next enrollment is July 1st, if things are still tight I think Im dropping it. (Its been high for years here, long before obama care and all that other crap--we are a small unhealthy group with a high average age.)....really the overtime is all that keeps me here..right now between health insurance and the gas money I spend, there goes $8.00 an hour right there. Some guys are not even getting their 40 at this point, so I guess Im lucky..but Ive told them before the minute Im not getting 40, I will go do something else.

Anyway, thanks for letting me vent...dont like doing it on the old facebook thing.....too personal you know? Then grandma and Aunt sophie get all worried and your rivals revel in your anguish...LOL....no but you know what I mean!

When I purchased a bike a few years ago, the seller met me in a very public and busy outdoor shopping mall parking lot, and even had me walk over to the AAA office in that same lot to take care of the transfer of ownership , as well as me obtaining my registration right then and there, which I thought was a very good idea for both of us. Just something you might consider as far as the paperwork if any.

Well i put my old rx7 up instead of a bike. Its junky and wont bring half of what my kx 400 would bring but I've got two people interested so we'll see how it goes. The rx is crappy as they go but the kx is pretty nice so im gonna try and hold onto it. Even tho i might ride the kx twice a year...i never had the money to fix up the rx7---- which i reverse inherited from mmy son... Car insurance will go down also.maybe the kx will save me next time.

Sorry to hear this news and hope the bikes stay with you.

I've had 2 decent experiences buying triples off ebay but I asked a ton of questions and asked for other photos.
Not so sure that I want to sell anything but high end bikes there.
Also have done well with CL, but don't cherish the idea of strangers seeing what's in the garage or house.

If you need to sell a vintage bike, I don't think you can go wrong with Rick Brett.
I've sold some stuff to him and he's always been very fair.
He paid me more than I was asking for a set of chambers once because he said they were worth it.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Got the RX sold...went through the usual run around with a bunch of CL people, and wound up selling it to a guy who runs an RX7/8 only business....I knew who he was when he called me, and it was a simple a clean transaction so that was good.

The recieving area is filling up a bit at work, so Im hoping it picks up soon. Meanwhile, my better half has been putting applications in which is really cool....my youngest son is 15, (the rest are adults) so if she manages to go back to work after a 25 year hiatus, that would be awesome. First race of the season is next weekend, even if Im not able to race I think I will go and watch. (Of course watch that be the first weekend they ask me to work in many weeks!) Thats how it usually goes!

Thought Id update this one---I actually did sell my KX400 a while later.

However, I sold it to a dear friend of mine and he is restoring it properly and when finished it will sit in his living room along side an early YZ that he restored.
Not a bad fate actually!!!

Things financially have steadied out since that time, no regrets.

:D
