I remember seeing this "Mothball Fleet" when I was a youngster.


Best guess is, most of the steel went to Japan and China.

They apparently took that fleet out in 1971 I was ten and we lived a few miles up the rode I never saw the fleet such a bummer to miss that. Good pic you posted

On mothball fleets in the early 80's there was a big one at Bremerton Washington full off WWII iron, I was in the Army then and we got a free pass to the USS Missouri , it was in horrible shape and closed to the public and tied up to it was the USS New Jersey in worse shape and totally closed, they saved both those ships

Fall River Massachusetts for public access is the USS Massachusetts you can freely walk anywhere on the ship, the Massachusetts is a sister ship to the New Jersey and the Missouri massive WWII battleships

There was/may still be parts of another mothball fleet in the inner parts of San Francisco Bay. That is where Howard Hughes' Glomar Explorer sub retrieval ship was anchored for decades. Glomar was a hollow center ship designed to raise a sunken submarine, that was it's only intent when it was built, but ended up doing a lot more. If someone got "too close" to it there in the bay, armed government agents in speed boats would intercept, secret stuff.

Suisun Bay in San Francisco has very few ships left, those remaining will be auctioned and scrapped -Last month I believe.

Guts up in your part of the country about 40 years ago I took a motorcycle trip and somewhere in Montana in a remote prairie setting i come across a airstrip just full of WWII planes and not a sole around , kinda like a auto junk yard with planes, I have no idea where in Montana but it was or maybe is still there

I was about 10 (1963-64) myself when I saw all those grey beauties sitting in the Hudson.
We did Hyde Park and West Point and a few other places that weekend.
My Dad was like me and loved to take "family rides".

That was a good 150 miles from our place on the island.
Just a Sunday drive....

As a kid that's all we did went to lots of local places , my Dad was from NYC and he hated NYC never failed to mention it I suspect that's the reason we never went further south than West Point to see the the mothball fleet , NYC in dad's mind started at the Rockland county line , we did west point a number of times to Trophy Point to see the war trophies then the museum did the same with my kids but we included NYC, the USS Intrepid and a endless display of military hardware are well worth a trip into the city .
