When I got this bike a last fall it looked terrible. I took the engine out and soda blasted it, polished the covers, cleaned the carbs, changed oil, changed the front tire, and went through the caliper and master cylinder. I bought a new chain and sprockets, cables, intake and air cleaner boots, spark plugs, handlebars and grips. The tank still has some rust so I put a spare Z1 tank on it for now. I didn't touch the timing or check the valves yet but it fired right up and runs great. I am going to ride the crap out of it for now and then get some pipes and body work for it. GUTS - I need to pull the motor out of my Z1 and I was wondering what was your preferred method? Strip off the top end first or lay the bike over? Also, would you mind posting a better picture of your motor stand? I need to put something together to work on my motor. Thanks. Kevin |

The Z1 is actually not a bad bike to take the engine out of. In the Kawasaki factory video they do it in about 11 minutes from the time the side stand goes down on the bike till the engine is out. I didn't take anything off the engine to get it out. The key is to lift the back till it clears the engine mount and pull the engine up and to the right, out the right side. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvbACuU86HY . I will get a few pics of the rig I have bolted to the stand, it fits Z1's, Honda CB750s, and ZR1100s. I plugged the intake and exhaust holes(and a few others)and then power washed it. After washing I soda blasted it and then rubbed on the finned areas with a scotchbrite pad. I have a 3/4 hp buffer with long mandrels and 12" wheels I do my cover polishing with. I really get good use out of my soda-blaster, it's one of the best tools I've ever bought. It is the king of the time savers and extremely versatile. |

Here is the bracket I cobbled together to attach to the engine stand. I didn't measure anything I just held the angle iron up to the engine and marked it for the holes and cutouts. ![]() ![]() |

Thanks for the images of the stand. My own motor was rebuilt by a monkey so it leaks terribly. |

Lot of H2 parts in the rolling "chassis" of a Z1...... they just added weight...... (and a bit of "sophistication") .... |
