Yeah, by the time I got there, the F-15 was King Kong, the F-16 was the new kid on the block, and the F-4 was second string. But as we used to say, you don't win wars by shooting them down 1 by 1 at 30000 feet... And I always felt lucky to have had opportunity to have flown it. |

What a cool story Tom! Really enjoyed the history and pics of now and back in the day. I'll have to look for this jet at the Air Force Museum of Aviation which is about 10 miles from me in Warner Robins GA. Additionally, my wife is a civil service E.E. Supporting guidance and navigation on the jets at Robins AFB with a classified clearance. Great stuff! |

I started out in the USAF in the 33rd OMS at Eglin AFB, FL crewing F4Es just like that one. My 1st airplane was 68-0449 and the last E model I crewed was 74-0116. The Phantom was a beast and brutal to work on. I still have scars that show from the fuel drains and the razor seals on the aux air doors. You are right Tom nothing in the world sounds like a J79 in after burner on a hot summer night as she claws her way into the sky... Glad you got to sit in the seat one more time....guys like you inspired me to go to engineer school and get me a pair.of wings...on a side note I was a phase dock chief for the 335th Fighter Squadron at Shady J in 88 and we phased out the Phantom and stood up the F15E Strike Eagle in your old stomping grounds there.... Stand by for a fighter pilot!!! |

Cool! I love airplanes, used to fly Cessna's. No jets, just small planes. Lots of fun and scary sometimes. |

I still like flying light planes when I can, but it doesn't happen much any more. Just not much fun to be had flying around the Washington DC area. Tim, as far as I can figure it, my plane went straight from the 335th to the boneyard, in 1990 i think. It looked to me like they must have had a half dozen old Chief's jets at Holloman now. Must have been the best of the last that they still had in the boneyard. Mine is a "manned flyer", which means it is still doing well. There are a number there on "death row" that will never fly manned again. |

I enjoyed that story and the pics. I attempted to fly an F16 but it crashed before it left the ground. Totaled it completely. My son was not too happy as we just bought it. We tried putting duct tape on the nose and some crazy glue, but no luck. ![]() |
