I didn't want to hijack Barry's thread since this is getting way off track.

Jim's comment above reminded me of when I owned and sometimes raced my stock 64 Bug daily driver on Wednesday nights locally at Sacramento Raceway. 21.90's to 22.10's E.T.'s were also my 0-60 mph time! It was a dog but so much fun handicap racing much faster cars (just about all other cars other than Bugs), because by the time the other guy got his green light, I was 3/4 of the way down the track...yes 3/4! And some of them would get so antsy and anxious waiting that long, that when they finally did get their green, they spun and squeeled their tires at the line, which cost them precious time...!

But those were the days back in the mid 80's PRIOR to all the little import cars cluttering up the strip today, when you could make a run and by the time you came back around to your lane, you were just minutes away from making another run! We had some local guys with a small block Chevy V-8 Volvo wagon and another with a big block Chevy V-8 mid 80's Toyota Celica, turning 13's and 11's respectively!!!

Good read, seen some pretty good VW's at the drags here, going back.....it's called getting the power to ground, and weight transfer. Redline in first on my ZX10r is 103MPH............

Good story, Darrin. I remember seeing some cars like yours at 75 & 80 Dragway in MD, in the '70s. :D

I was exaggerating a little... the DT100's stock redline in 1st was probably really around 12-14 mph. Even after going to an 18" rear wheel and up two teeth on the front sprocket, 1st still seems really low. The current rule of thumb for the higher gears is 3rd gear at 30, 4th at 40, and 5th at 50 mph. Top speed before the engine gets really warm is just under 70, but I'm still working on it. Next is a 30mm H2 carb to replace the stock 22.

Dang Jim my DT might hit 50 but it gets there really fast with the stock stuff :D
I took it to Barber and rode it around the complex. Parked it right next to Evans Ward's H2.

Yeah John, the stock gearing and porting make it run out of steam around 50. Just going up a couple teeth in the front will raise the top speed without sacrificing anything other than maybe the 1st gear power wheelie. Increasing the exhaust duration will take it up some more, without any noticeable loss in bottom and midrange. The stock exhaust porting is so conservative there's barely any 2-stroke "hit" at all. I think they were trying to make it easy for little kids to ride. Of course with the stock brakes, 50 gets pretty exciting.

hahaha cool story Darrin
I remember we had a Ford Econoline van with a 6 cylinder we used to deliver bikes etc at Glen Cove Kawasaki when i was there. 1971-72
One of the perks, was taking the van out to Center Moriches, NY to National Speedway on Sundays.
We usually took a couple of threes out to race, but I was just part of the pit crew.
I actually won two trophies with the van, after running it just to get some free advertising on the way down the strip.
Think my times were a lot like your bug times too. LOL

I'm good with 1st gear power wheelies and 50 mph, especially on Cheng Shin non DOT knobbies. The thing actually stops pretty well.

Steve, many years ago I used to take my 89 5.0L Vortech supercharged Mustang out there too, and won 1st a couple of times, but the real fun was taking my (non-turbo) 98 Subaru Forester out there and taking 1st on my very first (and third) visits to the track, each time going through 5 rounds of quicker cars. My auto trans AWD Forester was just consistent enough to win!
