So true, you get what you pay for. I put off for a looooong time on getting a decent welder. This is absolutely awesome! I look for things to weld and love helping friends and neighbors. Like mentioned above, it automatically adjusts wire feed rate and amperage. Just enter the type and thickness of the metal. You can also adjust it if needed. It also does TIG and stick. Very versatile. Without the gas cylinders you are looking at $2k

I started with a simple $100 used mig with gas. Just be sure your metal is clean and don't have any wind or breeze around your welding area.

I picked up a Hobart 125 EZ this morning off craigslist. Should do what I need. Looks brand new, $120.

The most versatile setup would be to get yourself an O/A torch setup. You can weld, cut, braze and heat with it. You can also do aluminum it.

For home use I bought a Lincoln mig welder, gas type. It's fine for small thin stuff and was only about 300. It's the type you could flux weld with too
but gas is the way to go. Super easy to use and it welds great.

Thanks. Great info. I only plan to weld carbon steel up to 1/8th inch at this point. If I get comfortable, I will upgrade at a later date. I will probably start with fabricating a bracket for my compressor motor.

I bought a Miller 180SD off Craigslist for $1,100 about six years ago, amazing welder. One cool feature is no cooling fan till it gets really hot so about 99% of the time you don't even know its turned on. Butch in Knoxville has one just like it, you should run by and get him to let you run a few beads.
