The military's klr's run on diesel. Ive read where there capable of incredible mileage..But so far not available to the public..Was shopping for one for quite awhile ( gas klr ). Unless you want to opt for the older 600cc the 650's really hold there value. at least here in the n.w. Ive since fallen for the triumph tiger. But have as of yet been able to find an affordable tri.. Very comparable to the gs beemers.. We have thousands of miles of logging roads near by. Only reason I want one. The views and high mtn lakes near by are loaded with trout and only accessible by dirt.. :(

I'm fascinated with the true dual sport bikes and would like to pick up a good older KLR to ride some gravel and explore. I have a friend local that rides long distance and dirt too with his. Sounds horrible clicking and poppity popping down the road. Seems like it would be a pain on the slab. I hoping there are a few Kwackers here that have some experience with the thumpers? And I would want to ride two up also........?

You would get bored with a KLR in the same amount of time it took for you to read this.

Ric, two up, I'm talking access on dirt roads or gravel to get to a trail to do some hiking, maybe some inaccessible sightseeing, nothing more. I agree dirt is for one up exclusively. To be honest, I was more concerned with the street capabilites of the thing. Lots' of folks ride them all over the place but I question the wisdom of it. Thump thump.
Cody......I get bored easily so I probably wouldn't get to finish the sentence. Always nice to hear the skinny from my smoker brethren.

Well you can take a Ninja250 on dirt/gravel roads and then you'd have a great little road bike and communter. To me, thumping on a single is not a problem....doesn't bother me. My KLX is rather smooth in fact.

the KLR has a cult following, similar to those that collect AMC Pacers and Gremlins.

Yeah, they get you from point a. to point b. But they just might be the most boring motorcycle ever made...and Yes, I have owned one.

Get another Weestrom if you want a fun (but cheap) touring bike that can handle the occasional dirt road. It isn't much heavier than a KLR and has 2x's the horsepower. My wife and I went exploring some gravel roads last year on my Wee and it was awesome.....except the deep sand part, and the nearly running out of gas due to ending up 20 miles down a dead end part..... and never mind the fact that it was 93 degrees with 70% humidity.

Wee's are awesome, but I still lie awake at night hearing that clickity clack sewing machine spooling up. Smooth as butter once you flutter up to speed though. Admittedly weestrom is almost the perfect all around bike.
Oueeii.......a raised two fiddy ninja wid knobbies and all ghettoed out. Now your talkin.

Cody, you've used Pacer, Gremlin and KLR in the same sentence. Now I can't be caught dead on a "thumper".

Now if you just had the money to throw around...and they're not that expensive.....

I've driven a F800GS and it was a hoot. Would pull double easily and handle the back woods dirt roads and even single track with ease.....all kinds of cases and other gizmos for them.

Just a thought....

Bill,

There is a semi-local place to the Gap that rents KLRs. You could rent one for a day to see what you think. Just a thought/ idea before you make a purchase. ;)
