Worse this morning, mandatory evacuations for many cities and towns all around us (wish I had more shells for my 12 gauge) but OK so far - but it's CLOSE.

I'm about to load up the truck with the bigger items, Liz has a volvo x70 wagon for critters and a few smaller items. Only bike I'll take it the DT400, probably most practical MC in this case - like my old truck instead of my Chrysler 300 - more utility in the truck and DT than anything else.

Debating whether to pack helmet or not          :o :o

Hoping for the best for you and yours Brother Barry. Pain in the airse I know. Pertect your family, you know that.

Jim in the Woods, When we have a mandatory evacuation here it means thay strongly suggest you get the hell out and if one has been ordered and you need any kind of help you will not get any from local government etc;. Jim I can see you swinging a new chamber at them.

Jesus! That fire looks bad! We do not have any earthquakes, hurricanes, forest-fires, typhoons, flooding etc but whether or not we wear helmets both the winters and taxes are horrible :wtf:

I wish all the best and be safe!

I've been around serious death & destruction from tornados. I too thought "mandatory evacuation" was too much. But I now realize, in the cases I've been around, that it's more about resource capabiltiy than anything else. Thats is, rescue and other such services are busy and stretched to the limit. Thus, using mandatory evacuation helps eliminate any additional such problems until things can get settled down.

My take on it anyway....

Hi John - thanks for asking. We're still on alert for evacuation - but judging from where the main fire has moved north I think we're OK and expect the standby notice to be lifted anytime tomorrow. That could change since the tail of the main fire is still 3 miles west of me - we're only separated by a ridge. If the fire crests that we're a goner. The C130 fire planes started flying this morning - they are HUGE and there are two of them here. I think there's only 6 in the country - something like that.

Quote "Each plane can carry up to 2,600 gallons of retardant that can be sprayed in as quickly as five seconds, covering a quarter-mile of brush, trees or grass. It’s a major upgrade over the force that’s fought the fire since Saturday afternoon".

They let one of the smaller towns (Manitou Springs) back in last night, several other towns are fully evacuated. Last I heard it was around 11,000 people evacuated and at one point there were over 13,000 homes and businesses in danger but so far not a one has been burned - these guys are awesome.

Pikes Peak is still closed, Garden of the Gods closed, Cave of the Winds and the Indian Cave Dwellings too - much much more closed. The Pikes Peak hill climb is July 8 but I'm thinking it will be OK. It has affected a lot of the practice though since the racers have not been on the mountain since Saturday and probably won't be for a few more days. A bummer for the racers.

I took this video yesterday afternoon from my roof - you can hear how windy it is, still 97-99 degrees outside, 9% humidity:

Esa, we're not complaining, it's part of where we live - although Colorado Springs has the most US Forest boundaries of any American city - 30 miles along the city western border - yes we're THAT BIG of a city, roughly 30 miles long and 25 miles wide.

Our weather here is better than what California says they have (and don't). We average well over 300 days of sunshine a year and our winters are very mild. Snow does not stay and you can generally ride all year round. Thats why the US Olympic training center is here, the US Air Force Academy and more.

Cheers everyone.
