I owned two Aermacchi 125s back in the day. They stayed in need of repair all the time. Even knowing that, I still have a soft spot for them as they were my first smokers! I liked the 72 Rapido 125 better than the 73 TX 125 model. Was that bike you purchased known as the Leggero? Does it have the premix cup built in under the gas cap like my Rapido 125 did? Should be a fun resto. I've heard there is a guy local to me that has the bulk of parts for the Aermacchi bikes- think his name may be Jerry Barber? Have fun Jim!

Evans, mine is a 1966 65cc M65 Leggero with the three speed shift on the clutch grip, 6V magneto, and forward kickstarter on the left side. First year of production was 1965. I think in 1967 they were significantly redesigned with a new gas tank and foot lever shift.

Jim, as I understand it, the 65 and 66 models were 50cc, going to 65 in 1967. Mine doesn't have a date code on the frame as it should but we identified it by some of it's parts.... My engine was a disaster. I thought I would never get the cylinder off, and I've seen a worse crank. I had to replace every piece of it.

Lane, I think you are right, I measured the bore and stroke from the marks in the cylinder. It is oversquare with a bore of 1.53" and a stroke of about 2.88" making the displacement 44.6cc. VIN number on the engine and the VIN stamped on the frame is 66S18389 indicating 1966 S1 (not sure what the S1 designates?) and 8389 the production number? This thing is stock to the bone, going to just clean up the paint and wax the body work, but the motor is getting the full treatment. As questioned earlier about the gas cap, these are premix bikes and the gas cap has a measuring cup on the reverse to add 3oz of 10w40! to the tank.

I was lucky, the motor was in very good shape except for bearings and seals. Would be cool to get Jim Hobbs to build an expansion chamber for it, but the chrome on this one is still quite good......

Once I get the cases cleaned, will be heading to the shop to get them and the head bead blasted before re-assembly. Working to source some new rims and replace the original Pirelli tires, spokes are re-useable. Hubs will need bead blasting.

UPDATE......

Got the cases stripped for cleaning. New bearings and seals on order. Stay tuned......

I have Dellortos on my Moto Guzzi, and after 40,000 miles they don't seem to have worn enough to notice. Maybe it depends on which Dellorto in particular. Or maybe what kind of air filters are used.

Jet needle and needle looked almost new on the carb, in fact, all the brass was in good shape but the odometer only reads 2,557 miles, no where close to the miles Jim has on his Guzzi.

Wonder if 2-stroke intake reversion has an effect on wear of needle, etc?
