Considering they need to dispose of tons of high grade alloy, why not melt them down and recycle the material?
I get the chain of custody although could the opposition really do anything considering all that is left is a shell?

I read it had to to with satellite location. Since they were nuclear capable, they had to be "locate-able"...... :e4
