Combustion in propane- or methane-fuelled engines is usually much quieter than in diesel engines running on gasoil or heavy fuel oil. Also, firing pressurse in those days were much lower than they are now.
Great that such historical engines have survived and are still in running condition! :thumbup:

21.5" bore = 54.6 cm; 36" stroke = 91.4 cm. But huge? Naah..... try a 900 mm bore, or a 2,592 mm stroke. Two-stroke marine diesel engines, THEY are huge!
