Due to the nonavailability of a modern 750 two stroke street bike I decided on the next best thing: a new BMW S1000RR. But, as I have just started saving, its going to be a long haul. Now I just came across a 2004 Hyabusa with 19000 miles on it for $6500. I'm just wondering if that's a lot of miles for a well maintained bike that has been ridden pretty hard. Also, what should I worry about mechanically, that is, valves, crank, top end, head gasket, etc? Are thses bikes expensive or difficult to repair?

I never had one but here is a strong Hayabusa club and a friend of mine is a member. A quick recall:

-high-tech bike, lots of (some say too much) electronics
-when older, lots of small faults
-difficult and expensive (here) to repair
-at its best when the warranty is still on
-designed for 150-300 km/h speed range, 95 - 185 mph
-not so good on race track
-unpleasant in the city

Highlight is to go to Germany and enjoy free limits.

S1000RR is almost a ready racer, much harder chassis.

19000 miles is nothing, Hayabusas are pretty much bullet-proof. Bit big and heavy tho, IMHO.

Hyabusa's are great fun and very reliable In Aus , I have too friends with them and one of them use to track day it , a lot , and hard as he knew he was going to sell it soon (only keeps bikes a short time ),If you buy it you will be pleasantly surprised i think you may not want the BMW urs Al in aus

Great bikes, very reliable. Smooth and easy to ride/ Very comfortable. They handle like a long, slightly soft sport bike. Good fun at the track!

Check out this Suzuki B King.It has a Busa motor and a wicked looking rear exhaust. I saw my first one yesterday.
