The only thing that seems logical is that the incoming mixture that escaped out the exhaust pipes, that normally is shoved back in by the tuned expansion chamber, stayed in the head pipes because the 3 into 1 exhaust doesn't work well. It was then ignited by the next exhaust port opening, and this repeated until the pipes glowed.

You've hit on the answer to 3-1 pipes, Andrew: a nozzle at the output end, and extra-strong hangers.
