Quite an advanced 2 stroke, why the reed valves? If it is pulling plain air into the bottom end, what's a little reversion between friends?

Because a piston port is a primitive design. With or without fuel, charge blown out of the crankcase still reduces power, and causes the same bad turbulence in the intake system.

Was interested about this so I searched out the Ski Doo dyno results from 2010. Been a long time since I owned a sled, was curious just how narrow the powerband is:
