You would be correct, actually 90% of all the arfs availible from Tower, great planes horizon and the like are made in china, but there is a HUGE difference in quality of products. I was referring to the offbrands and no name brands that are of inferior quality.

I'm late to the party, but I'll agree that the Champ is a great first plane. Horizon Hobby, Parkzone's parent company also has probably the best customer service in the industry. A lot of the cheap off brands are good planes, but I wouldn't recommend them for beginners. They don't always fly the best and without experience you can quickly end up with a pile of broken foam.
