So after being tired of working on the floor I decided it was time to build a welding/work table. So this is what I came up with. The legs are 3"x4", the upper supports are 2"x4"(2 of the end ones are 2.25"x4") and the bottom cross pieces are 2.25"x2.25". It is all 3/16" wall except the 3 top supports in the middle with are .125" wall. The feet are 1"-8 threaded swivel feet, and they are 6"x2" casters. I also put a piece of 1"x1" across the one side for a clamp hanger. The top is 4'x4' and 1/2" thick. I also added a bumper mount hitch receiver to it so I can use it for removable tooling. I just hope it's sturdy enough to weld a set of WTF's on  .

That should do the job - are you a diesel mechanic? (Had a friend who was a diesel mech - he built a billy-cart for his son, it weighed about 150kg....! )

Wow - very nice, very stout. I built a similar one a few years ago for the same reason out of 1" square tube - you're going to love it! Then I added a piece of pipe on one side to hold my wire-feed nozzle. The added a shelf, then added a flat vise, then then then then then

Thanks for the replies. RODH2, no I am not a diesel mechanic. This weighs in a little heavier than your friends table. The top alone weighs 325# and the entire table is probably over 500#.

Barry, I am sure there will be a couple of add ons. I do plan on putting a shelf over the lower cross supports. I don't know if I am going to solid mount a vise on it yet or use the reciever hitch to mount a removable one. The tube for the mig gun sounds good. This will probably mostly see TIG action for the time being so the gun holder will wait for a while.

I forgot to mention that the steel for the frame I had got for free, which is one of the reasons that it got made a stout as it is. It was from some shipping skids that some machinery had come in on at work. If it were on my bill it would have been a little on the lighter side. I did have to pay for the top, wheels and legs though. I could have had some legs for free as well but they were not swivel.

Free Steel! Oh heck yes!!!

I MiG on mine a lot and get splatter and such. I use old dull grinding disks using a light touch on the grinder to clean the top off without taking off the material on the bench top.

Ya know, it's almost too pretty to weld on

I made my shelves out of expanded metal so all crap from grinding and other dirt falls through. Expanded metal is expensive at the Box stores and usually small anyway. Buying it at a metal supplier much cheaper but the ones around here only sell 4x8 and it's a bit pricey - BUT - there's always a use for it.

I have a couple of vises I use, a low profile one is bolted on but can be removed, I have a couple of other ones I can clamp on and I have Big Bertha that's bolted to a heavy plate - big enough to hold things but not too heavy to move.
