I'd been kicking around the idea of getting a Ninja 250 to play with, but since my trip to Road America's vintage bike races, I've been just enamored with the 125cc 2 stroke sportbikes. All I saw at RA were a few Honda RS125's, but it was enough to get me searching, and there's room in my stable for another bike. I've no desire to race, just street riding. The bikes I've come across in the class so far are the:
Honda RS 125
Aprilia RS 125
Aprilia AF1 125
Kawasaki AR 125
Kawasaki Ninja 100RR(not a 125, but I've got a soft spot for 100's :) )
Suzuki RG 125
Cagiva Mito
Yamaha RD 125
Yamaha TZ 125

Anyone have any experience with bikes in this class? Any bikes I missed(that's not as rare as hen's teeth)? I see a lot of them are euro/asian spec, are any of these bikes even road legal in the US? Is there any reason I wouldn't want one of these little bikes to play with?

I got a line on a 87 tzr 125. 3200 asking on OC craigslist. Lotta dough for an old starter bike. The japan spec has a true variable exhaust port which is cool. Definitely fun stuff!

There is a lot of maintenance on little race bikes. A small street version would be a better choice.

It may have been the same one, but a couple months ago there was one floating around for $1,000 less. I wanted it SO badly, but shipping made it unfeasible for me.

Pretty gaudy bikes in stock form, but tons of potential. Would be a blast to ride.

That's the problem I keep coming up against. When you come across them, most of the bikes I've seen in this class are $3k and up, or way out of reach. A few weeks ago, there was an Aprilia RS125 on e-bay for a decent BIN that I would have been all over...except it was in Italy... :(

us uk guys are lucky/unlucky when it comes to 125 sports bikes, lucky as there's plenty about. Unlucky as they are restricted to 12 HP and it is a learner riders bike, so normally used, abused, crashed & broken

Generally speaking, is the 12hp restriction designed into the bikes, or is it something that can be easily "fixed" by swapping out a few parts(exhaust, carb tuning, etc)?

depends early Yamaha TZR 125's and DT 125's had their power valve removed and set shut, a cheap release of some hp would be to open the power valve, this of course would rob the bike of low down power. powervalves and servo etc were expensive and you needed to provide your full motorcycle licence to buy the kit to de-restrict it

for the Aprilia RS125 I have found this

Aspes 125cc from 76 to 1981, single air cooled engine, 5 then 6 gears, 30 then 34 mm Dellorto carburator: brilliant.
But an unrestricted or a derestricted Aprilia RS 125cc will be a killer 115 MPH+ :shh:
