Ok, I have some money, not alot, put aside for winter projects...getting ready for next season in AHRMA, where I race vintage class MX.
I have the chance to purchase two bikes at this point. One is an 81 Yamaha YZ465 and the other is a 1987 KX500.
AHRMA doesnt really have a class for the KX, I could always run it in modern support class that they have. (I have always wanted a KX 500, not sure how the '87 stacks up against other years though.)
The YZ 465 fits nicely into the gran prix class, and it is in excellent shape, lots of new parts, the thing was built by a good friend who decided to get out of racing shortly after. He could easily get twice what he said I could buy it for, so its an absolute steal.
The KX is in original condition, it may be a bit sacked out, Im not sure, I do not know the person with it. I know they hold up well, its hard to wear one out.
The thing is I know the Yamaha is a better buy for sure. As I am writing this, Im thinking the 465. Its got to be nearly as thrilling to ride as a KX500....All in all, Ive been wanting a more modern bike because everything I have now falls into the twin shock, 4 inches of travel category. I bet the 465 will be a sweet relief over the ruts compared to what Ive been riding. REally the KX's appeal is sort of sentimental, everything I own is a Kawasaki although I did have an MX400 Yamaha that I loved once.
So, all else being equal (and its not, the Yammy is in far better shape) HOw do some of you think the YZ465 stacks up to an early KX500 as far as power and suspension.....
Thanks!
