I've currently got an h1 transmission in my h2 and I'm putting the h2 transmission back in, are the bearing on the input shaft and the kick start gear the only things I need to change ? I can't remember and couldn't find it by searching here. Dave

The h2 kicker gear is bigger
Did you not like the gear ratio in the
H2?

It wasn't much different to the H2 transmission, after I went down 1 tooth on the front sprocket to improve the pick up it worked fine. The reason I put the H1 trans in was because there's lots more parts availabe, but there's a noise coming from the motor which goes away when the clutch is pulled in (the clutch checks out ok) so I'm taking it apart again to find out what it is (before it costs me lots) and while I'm there I'll put the H2 trans back in, only because that's what it was meant to have, but I reckon I'll leave that smaller front sprocket on to compensate for the extra 50mm on the swing arm.

And yes, I'll definitely remember the kick start gear, I don't want to be trying to find hills to park on every time I stop

Haven't got the numbers in front of me, but there is a bigger gap 1st/2nd and/or 2nd to 3rd in a H1 box, so when you put it in a H2, you start losing drag races.....! The H2 ratios are actually pretty good, whichever way you look at it!!

yep, I figured that if they were meant to have an H1 transmission they would have. When I got the bits to rebuild the H2 trans it was always going back in sometime :)

H1 to H2 ratios are very similar, real difference is the number of teeth to get to those ratios. H1 has smaller teeth, H2, larger, to handle the added torque the H2 makes over the H1. More tooth mass of metal, more strength.

are the 2nd and 4th gears on the output shaft the same for the H1 and the H2 ? the 2nd gear cog has the same number of teeth, same width and diameter and looks identical for the H1 and the H2. the 4th gear cog has the same number of teeth, same width and diameter and the only difference I can see is that the H1 cog has more bevel section where the shift fork runs. the 4th gear H1 cog I have looks better than the 4th gear H2 cog so would be good if I could use it.

Motogrid shows these part numbers

1973 H1
13131-011 2ND GEAR OUTPUT SHAFT
13135-007 4TH GEAR OUTPUT SHAFT

1973 H2
13131-033 2ND GEAR-OUTPUT SHAFT
13135-015 4TH GEAR-OUTPUT SHAFT

I would think that if you changed both the 2nd and 4th gear sets, both shafts input and output, you would get compatible gear sets, but, as said before, the H1 transmissions are not as strong as the H2 gearboxes, higher torque ratings for the H2, and that is why the gears are different, stronger root diameter teeth on the H2 gears. .

At the race department, we NEVER used an H1R transmission in an H2R, that would be for the criminally suicidal types. We DID use H2R transmissions in the H1R's, tough.
