You may find it easier and more accurate to use a piston stop and a degree wheel to check each cylinder.

I have to do disagree with that.
The difference between 23 and 25 deg is .020" on a H1.
I can see .001" easily on a dial indicator which is the equivalent of about 1 degree on a degree wheel.

I agree with Walms, dial indicator all the way. I am lucky enough to have been doing this for decades, and have two complete timing dial indicator sets, one a Kawasaki, the other a Yamaha (the Kawasaki one is better!). Although a bit more labor intensive, John's digital vernier caliper method also works.
