Sounds like a rifle but I thought the garand was a korean war weapon.

This is true. Where I grew up the hills were so steep and long, when your ball rolled down the hill you just said "screw it"...

M-1 Garand the main WWII infantry battle rifle for enlisted troops helped free Europe from the Nazis and the Pacific from Imperial Japan, Officers, Para troopers cooks, clerks etc etc got the M- Carbine a very cool rifle indeed..

I saw that in person Yakima Firing range Wa. they were shooting Airiel targets oddly enough made by Harley Davidson :o at one point in the exercise they lowered the barrels and blasted about 30 seconds worth level down range thats about 2,000 rounds ya should have seen the range it was an explosion of dirt and tumble weeds followed by a brush fire caused by the tracer rounds,,, really cool stuff as long as your on the trigger end of it...
