Everything I have done to improve the spark has really helped the performance of the H2. I do not foul plugs, its running great (it only took a year of fiddling around) and life with the H2 is great.

With that being said, I am thinking an even hotter spark would be great, has anyone replaced their coils and where do you get them? Any improvement in running? What do you know about coils. Do they fit in the stock locations?

Thanks Collective

I'm using these coils, courtesy of Triplenut's stash... I never really had issues with the stock coils in dry weather but the bike would act up in the rain because of a shortened front fender. These units have the same resistance as the stockers but are as water tight as a ducks ass.

OMC outboard coils... $20 bucks a pop. :)

they come with the caps and a short piece of solid core spark lead so you will need apeice long enough to reach your plugs should be able to get it from your omc dealer as well.

I sent some of these to jim to test http://www.ebay.com/itm/IGNITION-COIL-5 ... es&vxp=mtr
All appeared as good or better than others tested including factory.

From what I've read based on Chris Ritchie tesing as well as what a bunch of knowledgable H2 guys have said is:
* Define "hotter spark"
* The ignition design is sound up to about 8.000 RPM and changing the coils does not offer imrpoved performance
* It's nearly (if not) impossible to modify the stock set up to have a shift light or high speed retard
* I've seen a number of stock H2 iggys run low 9's at the track
* The aftermarket boxes made by JohnOR6 from the old board tested VERY well
* I would think the new boxes being made would also work great

Of all the coils I tested in the KTW thread, the only ones that made a noticeably brighter spark, with measured higher current at the plug were the Dynatek DC9-4. The difference was small and the price is high. Dynatek was nice enough to loan me a coil to test, and they seemed interested in our market. The coils are larger than stock and won't fit the existing mounts on an H2.

a simple bracket to make and the omc units bolt in place of the origianls in less space.

I agree, the bracket you made was pretty simple... They tuck in there pretty nice too.

Wasn't someone using coils that were the size of a 1/2 roll of quarters?

Most of the cheap moped coils on eBay fit that description. I've tested about 4 or 5 different versions of those and they all work fine. The output is probably slightly lower than stock coils, but I'd be surprised if it would make any difference in use. They do need to have air flowing around them to stay cool. I think it was Cody who ran into trouble with that.

I have the cheap moped coils on my H1 (H1d/H2 ignition).

1000+ miles and the bike runs superb. 3 of these coils is about the weight of ONE stock H2 coil.
