Hey guys, I went to the DMV to finally title my H2 but when there the title caused a bit of confusion and I told them I would just come back. It seems on the original title the Motor vin is listed as well as the frame vin. On the NC title the motor vin is actually listed first then the frame. Has anyone else had this kind of issue? The agent seemed a little confused as to what to do.

I'm not sure what you're asking, Carl. My NC titles have the frame number and the engine number to the right of that. What is the thing that's confusing them, just the order?

I'm just wondering if the engine vin belongs on the title or not?

OK, I just looked through several titles and I was wrong. My '72 H2 title is the only one with both numbers. Where it says VIN, it has the frame number, and then the engine number to the right of that. All my other titles, including my '78 Yamaha DT100, have a single VIN off the head tube.

Maybe older than a certain year the have both, or maybe the procedure for titling antique vehicles in NC changed between when I titled the H2 and the DT100. In any case, it seems you don't have anything very unusual going on.

In my county, we have a cop at the office that does the license testing who in in charge of inspecting antique vehicles. He's the one who comes out to my house to looks does an inspection when I title an old vehicle in NC that's never been titled here before. If you can find that guy in your county, he probably knows why some titles have both numbers.

My California title on my 75 500 had both vin numbers (of course) on the title. I got lucky when I titled it here in NM I had the original cases that I had reinstalled. I guess it has to do with stolen motors maybe? No help for you, but a FYI.

This won't help you either but all old Wisconsin motorcycle titles used ONLY the engine VIN number, it can cause a major headache now!!

On one of my H2's it also had both numbers next to each other. It was also an original title. Almost had to get it checked by the Highway Patrol but I convinced her it was all good. Lucky

Yes, Demus, WI used to use only the Engine part number but have now switched to using only the Frame part number. The DMV has a process for switching, even if you've swapped engines, but I believe it includes an inspection from a cop.
