I understand why unsprung weight is important to a suspension but I'm trying to wrap my head around the negatives of the increased centripetal force of the heavier rim? Maybe someone can chime in on that?

I figured John was thinking of increased moment of inertia and increased gyroscopic forces with a heavier rim, as opposed to centripetal force, but I could be wrong.

Ok wrong term Jim but you get the premise right? Other than approximately 2 extra ft-lbs to spool up the wheel, any negative effects on handling?

Having a stronger gyroscope won't help.

Yes, I mislabeled the gyroscopic effects with centripetal force.

And Andrew, the more weight of a spinning objects the more force is necessary to change the direction. Also it's the speed of the rotation, and also where the weight is located. The farther out the weight the more force necessary to change the direction. There should be a calculator somewhere.

My only comment... Take more left turns John ( Or is it right ??? )
Too much track time for you :P

LOL, well, unless I buy a "revised" set of leathers accommodating some minor mass changes, my track days are over..... :eh:

I taught gyroscope theory in the Navy. It is what makes a motorcycle turn (precession). I explain it with a bicycle wheel. Motorcycle mags incorrectly call the phenomena counter-steering.

The wheel is also unsprung weight, affecting the suspension. The lighter the unsprung weight, the quicker the suspension can react to bumps.

Now, if we can get someone to cut up a Lester mag we can do a real comparison for those...... ;)

The difficult part is finding a comparable 18" front Lester. A 19" completely bare front Lester weighs 10.6 lbs, and an 18" rear (h1 version) weighs 14.65 lbs.
