I guess I don't understand the "letter" system. I thought first year was nothing, 2nd years was "A", 3rd year "B", etc. That would make the '71's H1B but what about the CDI with distributor? I thought that was a '71 characteristic and clearly this bike doesn't have one. What am I missing here? :banghead

H1s don't quite follow the one-letter-per-year thing.

Far as my research, the h1b did not have a CDI vs. points ignition. Mine has points, also it has the front disk brake vs drum on other models, factory steering dampener as well.

There were 3 versions in 72, very strange year. Points and a front disc, CDI and front drum, and when all the old parts ran out, CDI and front disc.

Just to confuse the issue further.... In 1970 in Australia, you could buy the Red or Charcoal H1 with CDI OR points ignition....there was a price difference of about $60 at the time. Was that the case in U.S.A. ? (just something I have wondered about for a while.... well, since 1970 actually!) :?

USA CDI models only 69 to 71 included
USA 72 H1B points (H1B was worldline with points) or H1C CDI with drum brake front (H1C was US market only)
Originaly H1 was CDI only but this new electronic ignition made very bad TV and radio interferences so on most European Countries the H1 couldn't be homologated with CDI but only with points.

Well, this has been a learning experience so I dug out some old paperwork. My H1 as it stands now is KAF 46868 which makes it a late '71 but it has a disc brake. My engine has the high cover distributor but it has replacement cases (s/n KAE JJJJJJ -J was the first initial of the PO's last name) so it might be 1970. I had forgotten that this is also a different frame (the original was KAF 26564, an earlier '71) which I didn't use because it was broken where the sidestand got ripped off. I guess that's what happens over the years, lol.

The easiest way to describe an H1C is that it is an H1A with H1B seat, fuel tank, LH side cover, & oil tank.
H1/A for the Euro market were fitted with points. Those early Euro H1's that came with CDI were supposed to be retrofitted with points to meet law requirements.
