Post subject:  Gas Tank Options.....

I'm running into a steering clearance problem in my 71 H1 front fork conversion. The GSXR forks, hit the bottom of the gas tank, limiting the steering. If you recall, the front of the 69-71 tanks slope forward at the front bottom and the later ones have more of a "swept back" front. It turns out the forks hit right at the bottom. Anyone know if any later years with teardrop style will bolt on? I'm guessing after 71 they did away with the side bolt on style and went with the double doughnut and single rear bolt.
(So..... Idon't have my hopes up....)
But I know many have done this mod before me. Any suggestions? I could move the tank back a bit, or mod the tank....

Rich the late tanks don't bolt on at all
They just slide over a round rubber bushing
Which your early bike doesn't have ? Got to be creative
And widen the stops for the steering ?

I can't recall what the 69-71 steering stop on the frame itself looks like, but on my 72 h1 there's a round section that the lower tree contacts, and it was slightly out of whack (accident?) and allowed the fork ear on one side to contact the tank like you describe. There was no way I was going to be able to pound that straight again, so I picked up a machined collar with an Allen set screw somewhere online (I can't recall for sure, but I may have gotten it from this source http://www.ruland.com/ps_collars_setscrew.asp ) in the correct size so that it snuggly slipped over that frame stop, and this solved the problem.
