Beware! even if you do a cafe or a custom you can/will spend a lot of money. I'm guessing the crank in that thing will need rebuilt, that's $1000 right out of the gate... Lots of fun and frustration though :)

WOW! $1000 is a bit expensive. Worst case scenario with all new rod kits and top-of-the-line bearings and seals with shipping runs $780. Usually a rebuild runs between $400-$500.

Also I really enjoyed following your last build. That was very creative!

If the engine is still together, now is the time to check crank seals if you actually want to try to get away without a crank rebuild. There are procedures on the resource site:

Either way I'm going to replace all the seals, prior to me getting the bike it sat a good 15 years so I'm quite sure they should be replaced.

in all reality, the bearings are probably shot as well. they pit when sitting that long. sure, they might be ok right now, but they will go FAST when put under reg use.

.

I'm sure you are right, when I get engine out of frame and apart I will inspect it. More than likely just send it out anyway and have it done for piece of mind. While its out, should I have any "trick" stuff done to it? Ie: ballanced, welded, rods, etc.?

If your stock rods are deemed ok, I would just suggest getting them shot peened. Charlie did mine when he did my crank. No need for welding.
