I suppose the goal is less un-sprung weight but I'm curious if there is more benefit to focus on a lighter rim because of the centrifugal effect?

Also LC, didn't you make the comment that after it was all said and done, there wasn't much weight savings with your conversion?

Actually there was several things changed at the time of my conversion. I went from an H1 back hub with a Boranni 2.15 rim (120/90 tire) to a S hub with a 3.5 Excel rim fitted with a 140/80 tire (much bigger tire/tube/rim). I also went from a steel 530 sprocket to an aluminum 520.

The weight of the wheel assy ( brake/ sprocket carrier, sprocket, spacers, all but the axle) was 39 lbs. The new wheel assy (again with a much bigger tire/rim) was 37 lbs.

Hard to tell, as the bike was U/S for about 6 months due to winter and "improvements" last year (Donny's party was the maiden run). However it did feel less quick to throw around. This might be due to the wider/more gentle arc of the profile, a slight increase of trail (can't find the wheel size comparator), or the placebo effect.

Finishing touches on the hub. And yes it is not the "exact" same hub in before and after. ;)

Neat stuff ! :)

I see you've gone to an "S" hub now!
What size holes did you drill?

Is all the vertical load from the spindle taken by the chain adjusters alone, or have you also put a couple of sleeves on it to make it fit the H2 size slots in the swinging arm?

It was drilled to aprox 5/16", the OD of the recess for the spoke head was around .330" so they are close in relation. I used a #4 center drill that I drilled all the way through with. When you drill it the flange of the hub is not flat, so I used the center drill to prevent walking.

Hal, I belive that you need to have some sleeves made for the slots when you do the conversion to the H2.
