Just looking at a pair of N.O.S. Redwing rear shocks for my H2 rebuild. Has anyone had any experience with these shocks - specifically, do they dampen properly? They measure 13" eye/eye. Anyone care to comment?

I bought a pair of NOS Red Wing Hammerheads back when loudfastugly had them in stock.
Here's his listing and I had him install springs that would work for my 175 lb weight as he claims they come sprung too light.

IMO, the hammerheads are much better than stockers although I've never tried their more conventional models.
Not sure which style you are looking at but will probably sell mine as I'm about to go to a shock with a separate nitrogen canister for looks.

Did you buy Hammerheads? Or the other plain ones? I bought a set of the plain ones and they wouldn't fit on my '72 Because the base was too fat to clear the chain guard. I gave them to Walms who fitted them on his 500, but he said they were very soft...and then...one of them broke.. ;)

I'm the official shock tester... 3 failures and counting ... I must spen too much time on the rear wheel.
In the case of the Redwing shock, it was the cheesy aluminum spring preload adjuster that snapped.
And yeah, they would have been better suited for a 99lb. guy riding a mini bike.

Most of the non-repro shocks seem to interfere with chain guard mounting.
Could not use the stock chain guard with Hammerheads on either a 72 H2 or 73 H1

Chain guards are like racks and center stands......... UN-necessary dead weight...... :e11

My only complaint with some of these shocks on an H series is that there is little room to fabricate a chain guard so that you can run at your local drag strip. We have to cover from the rear case all the way to about 3:00 on the rear sprocket.
Most guys have these aluminum guards with small stansions. A broken chain woould rip them off in a heart beat but it's all the track requires.

I'm with Moo, no chain guard or center stand on my ride..but I do have short sissy bar for travelin gear, no rack... sissy bar holds my brief case for the ride to the office...

peace/love/triples
