I started a thread a couple of years ago over in pics an videos, posting.php?mode=reply&f=22&t=1702 and I'm finally getting back around to my project. Somehow kids, jobs and houses get in the way :D

To recap: I've got an engine out of a 72 H2. Tore the engine down, cleaned it (no blasting though), balanced the crank, new clutch plates, new clutch actuator bindex, carbs rebuilt, engine back together. Stuffed it into a '94 katana frame. Ran/rode pretty well but I had a couple of tuning issues. Enter the new baby, the bike got parked.

Now, I am finding myself with a little more freetime. So, I did what any other bored, middle aged father wants to do: I tore some stuff up to burn off some steam! :mrgreen:

First, I decided I didn't really like the gas tank and reach to the bars on the Katana so I grabbed an angle grinder and solved the problem

Added more seating area to the front edge of the seat (the old one tended to give you a camel-toe)

moved the footpegs forward 4", shortened the swingarm by 1.25" and relocated the shock mount

I shortened the passenger seat support bars and moved them up so I could tuck them under revised plastic. I also hacked the back of the frame off, leaving only the driver seat

I used a heat gun to reshape the plastic to get a cleaner, more compact look. it took a lot of 'weight' off the back end

I also decided I didn't like the long rake of the bike so I cut the stearing head off and stood the forks up

Next on the list: modify the plastics on the other side, finish reshaping the seat pan to blend in the modified plastics

The fork repositioning and swingarm shortening got the wheelbase down to 55", stock is 58". Not sure what the current rake is but stock is 25.3

Disclaimer, don't take this the wrong way. While I commend you on the work you are doing, you are modifying some pretty major parts of that bike. For the sake of your young child I hope your fabrication skills match your ambition.

There will definately be a slow 'test ride' down the 1/4 mile hill in front of my house before I put an engine in it. I'm worried i didn't get the headstock and swingarm aligned right. I spent about 2 hours lining them up with strings but I know how stuff moves when you put heat to it

You're saying you just steepened the rake arbitrarily? Rake and trail are nothing to guess at. It might be stable to 102 mph and then send you into a death flapper.

It was a bit arbitrary. I had a couple of inches between the wheel and the center pipe. The thing steered like a bus before the mod so I was willing to take the risk. Luckily I have a steering damper on hand for the '102 mph' scenario :)

At this point, it would be a good idea to measure what you have and make changes in the triple clamp offset if required... I rode a super motard recently that became unstable over 120km/h... It's not a nice feeling, trust me!
I also had a highschool buddy with a Suzuki GS 750 that would go into a tank slapper over 150 km/h, he would warn everyone that ever rode it, well one guy thought that he knew better and promptly took it over that speed. Sure enough, it did a tank slapper, wrote off the bike and put himself in the hospital for a month too!
Do the math, not the road test!!!
