Have any of you thought about putting an H1 motor in a newer chasis? I was thinking early GPZ 550 or possibly a late 80's 600 ninja or a 250 ninja. Just wondering?

I have seen a couple of nicely done ZX7R/H2 combos in the past. A 2-stroke engine is invariably shorter, if wider, and will slot into a lot of frames. Don't use an early Suzuki 'slingshot' frame, looks awful!!

I installed an H1 engine in a 1986 600 Ninja frame and an S1 into a 1987 Ninja frame. Fairly easy to do. Raced them for years at El Mirage and Bonneville. Many have installed triples in newer chassis. They would work better if you water cooled them before installing in the newer frame since the newer chassis are designed to have radiators.

If I was personally going to do it I think I would use the newest chassis that I could get my hands on. If you are going to go through the trouble why settle for 80's technology? Not that there is anything wrong with them but to me those bikes to me show there age. I think that the 250 ninja is also better suited for the rd350 motors, I would think you would want a little bigger of a chassis for a h1 motor.

I would one day like to do a 2 stroke in a modern frame. I think I would use a rz/banshee engine for the project though. Plenty of aftermarket support to make good numbers, only 2 pipes to deal with, water cooled, and a skinnier motor.

I paid $150 for 3 complete bikes (2 '86's and 1 '87) that I knew I was going to make into race bikes and there were hundreds of those bikes in the $50 range at the time. Cheap spare parts. If I was planning to ride on the street I would have gotten a newer model.

That is the big plus side to using an older chassis. Its really a balance of what you want the outcome to be and how much you want to spend.

What about insurance? Does the MTO consider it a modern sport bike? I know the insurance is cheap for my KH400 (Relatively speaking).

I have seen a 460 in a Pinto. The craziest thing I have seen was a 454 in a Chevette. I saw him on the freeway once. He could not keep it straight despite driving 15mph under the limit (55 at the time).
